We have identified two main problems in Sri Lanka when buying and selling decisions are made with regard to a product or service. If a consumer wants information on a certain product or service for their needs, there is no one-stop place where the consumer can find all the suppliers or service providers, information about those goods or services, customer experiences, and reviews in. Hence, the consumers will have to refer to multiple sources of information such as different websites, discussion forums, product review sites, etc. in order to make a well-informed buying decision.
In Sri Lanka, the majority of businesses are unable to reach out and capture their potential customers who are in search of the products and services that they offer. In addition, there is no platform for such businesses to directly engage and interact with their existing and potential customers to provide specific information about the product or services that the customers are looking for, in order to convince them in their buying decisions.
However, there are several online platforms where people share product information, user experiences, and reviews on an ad hoc basis. In most situations, these platforms are industry-specific, and also the information exchanged are not reliable as it may be partially biased due to reviews being done on a commission basis. Further, many of the websites are not user-friendly and there is a lack in tools provided for businesses to engage.
